Responses to the economic crisis and the bank bailout in Ireland, Greece and Portugal, and reflections on recent revolutionary events in the Arab world will feature among the many topics up for discussion at the 6th Annual Anarchist Bookfair which will be held in Liberty Hall, Dublin on Saturday 14th May.
The Bookfair, organised by the Workers Solidarity Movement, will consist of a day of meetings, debates and discussions and will also host bookstalls and information stands from a large number of political organisations and campaigning groups.
Highlights on the meeting schedule include
• Sins of the Father – a talk by Dublin historian and Irish Labour History member Conor McCabe on the development of the Irish economy in the 20th century and the roots of the bank bailout. (11:30 - 12:30 Theatre)
• Soccer versus the State - PM Press author Gabriel Kuhn on the subversive side of football (14:30 - 16:00 Theatre)
• Anarchism & Socialism: Reformism or Revolution? – U.S. anarchist activist Wayne Price on the revolutionary road to freedom (13:00 - 14:00 Connolly Room)
• Peripheral Vision - Anarchists from Portugal, Ireland, Greece & Spain discuss alternatives to Frankfurt-rule and the bailout blues (14:30 - 16:00 Connolly Room)
• The Arab Spring: News and Reflections - José Antonio Gutiérrez Danton, recently returned from Egypt, on the struggle for greater freedom in the post-Mubarak era (16:30 - 18:00 Connolly Room)
The Bookfair will also host a showing of ‘The Pipe’, Risteard O Domhnaill's acclaimed documentary film about the resistance to Shell’s pipeline by the Rossport and Erris community in West Mayo. (16:30 – 18:00 Theatre)
Bookstalls carrying an array of radical literature and books will be set up for the day. Among the organisations hosting Bookstalls will be AK Press, PM Press, Solidarity Books, Rebel Books, Workers Solidarity Movement and the Irish Labour History Society.
A huge number of campaign groups will be present with information stalls including Choice Ireland, Shell to Sea, Latin American Solidarity Centre and Campaign for City Arts.
Workers Solidarity Movement spokesperson Gregor Kerr said he expects this year’s Bookfair to be “an enormous success.” “With recent political developments the hunger and appetite for alternative political viewpoints has never been stronger,” he said, “the great thing about the Anarchist Bookfair is that it allows people to sample alternative points of view and to debate, discuss and chat about those ideas in an inclusive and non-threatening atmosphere.”
“There’s something for everyone at the Anarchist Bookfair,” Mr. Kerr continued. “You don’t have to be an anarchist or even to know anything about anarchism to come along. All you need is a willingness to explore and share new ideas. A few hours spent at the Anarchist Bookfair will indeed be a well spent few hours of your life.”
