Clare Daly and Mick Wallace carry out a protest to highlight military misuse of Shannon

category national | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Wednesday July 23, 2014 10:27author by fred Report this post to the editors

Yesterday independent TD's Clare Daly and Mick Wallace carried out a protest designed to highlight use of Shannon for military purposes yesterday. They were later released. Daly has vowed to hold the state to account for it's complicity in US military warmongering in the middle east and elsewhere. Fair play to Clare and Mick.

Clare has been one of our more conscientious TD's in her consistent opposition to US use of our airport in it's many pointless military campaigns that bring death and suffering to the "unpeople" of the middle east.

Clare Daly and Mick Wallace were arrested while attempting to inspect two US military aircraft.
Shannonwatch confirmed that the pair were on a protest to highlight a lack of scrutiny of US military movements through Shannon.

I say fair play Clare and to Mick. Thanks for yet again bravely putting your heads above the parapet instead of just sticking it into the trough like so many other spineless TD's and in doing so, representing the views of sane human beings who find war a sickening act.

Not that it should even be an argument compared to the overwhelming moral one, but It is also a fact, though not widely publicised by the MSM, that not only are we the beleagured taxpayers turning a blind eye to the transport of weapons to places like Iraq and indeed Israel where they will be used to kill poor brown "unpeople", but we are also actually subsidising these military adventures. The reason I say this is because we pay for security out of our taxes for their aircraft and for some reason we also waive commercial air fees for the US military when they use the airport. Any other aircraft using the airport must pay standard commercial air fees. However evidently baby killers are an exception to this rule because theirs is such an important cause which needs to be supported and partially underwritten by the Irish people.

From the independent's less than flattering article:

Speaking after their release from garda custody, Mr Wallace said they had been highlighting the issue of US military use of Shannon for the last three years in the Dail.

"We've been asking the Irish government to search these planes and prove they are not carrying weapons or munitions because there are strong suspicions that they are," said Mr Wallace.

"All our calls have fallen on deaf ears but former minister Alan Shatter told us if we could provide the evidence the government would do something and that's what we're trying to do and that's why we tried to reach these two planes."
